How to Pray Together as a Couple in 5 Minutes

Praying together doesn't have to be long or complicated. Here is a simple five-minute method you can repeat every day to turn prayer into a shared habit as a couple.

Why Praying Together Is Worth It

Praying as a couple draws you closer to God and to each other at the same time. It makes room to name what weighs on you, to give thanks for what is good, and to ask for help instead of carrying everything alone.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”

Matthew 18:20 (WEB)

The Method in 5 Steps

  • Minute 1, settle. Sit side by side, put the phone away, and take a deep breath. Begin with a simple line: “Lord, we are here before you.”
  • Minute 2, give thanks. Each of you says out loud one thing you are grateful for today. Be specific; a small detail is enough.
  • Minute 3, confess and forgive. In a few words, admit something you would like to do better. This is not the moment to point at your spouse, but to open up before God.
  • Minute 4, ask. Bring one request for the two of you and one request for someone else. Speak naturally, as if you were talking.
  • Minute 5, bless. Close by praying for each other, in a single sentence. End with an “amen” together.

“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”

Philippians 4:6 (WEB)

How to Keep the Habit

Pick a fixed time, such as right after dinner or before bed, so prayer doesn't depend on remembering. Start with five minutes and don't make it longer until the habit is firm. If you miss a day, pick it back up the next day without guilt.

“Pray without ceasing.”

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (WEB)

Tips for the First Days

  • Take turns starting, so both of you have a voice.
  • Pray with eyes open or holding hands, whatever makes you more comfortable.
  • Silence is fine. A short pause is part of prayer.
  • Don't correct how your spouse prays. What matters is sincerity, not the right words.

Adapt It to Your Season

The five minutes are a floor, not a ceiling. On a rushed day, keep only thanks and one request, and you still prayed together. When a decision or a worry is heavy, slow down on the asking step and sit with it. Some couples add a short passage before step two, reading one verse aloud and praying from it. Try leading on alternating weeks, so the quieter one grows comfortable starting. The method is a frame; let your own life fill it.
